| Starting after puberty, self-breast exam (SBE) should be done monthly, 5-10 days after menstruation ends
Fibrocystic breasts is a common and harmless condition experienced by women beginning in their mid 20's until menopause
A mammogram is one of the methods to assist in the detection of breast lumps
A baseline mammogram should be done at age 40 and annually thereafter
Women with a family history of breast cancer in a close relative may need more frequent exams and/or mammograms
A breast exam by a Health Care Provider is recommended annually and usually before getting a mammogram
Breast infections associated with breastfeeding (mastitis) is treated with antibiotics |

Urgent Care - Have you identified one or more of the following symptoms?
- Lump on breast or underarm felt upon self-examination
- Nipple discharge (bloody, brown, milky or clear fluid) or abnormal appearance of nipple
- Change in breast size, shape or symmetry
- Breast tenderness, swelling, nausea, period is late, fatigue
- History of fibrocystic disease or previous breast cancer with new lump

Self-Management - You can help in the following ways:
- Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) for discomfort, if not contraindicated or the possibility of pregnancy exists
- Apply warm moist compresses to breast every 30 minutes, 3 to 4 times per day
- If breast symptoms associated with menses:
- decrease salt intake
- wear a good support bra
- eliminate chocolate, caffeine, cola and tea
- increase fluid intake to 10-12 8 oz. glasses per day
- Eat a low fat, high fiber well balanced diet
